Aswan High Dam: Temple
More than 40 years ago, the Aswan High Dam on the Nile - a pharaonic project of Nasser's Egypt built with the help of the Soviets - was inaugurated in the south of the country, making it possible to increase its energy resources and to expand its irrigated areas.
The project, however, threatened the treasures of ancient Nubia, dividing its territory between present-day Egypt and Sudan, and whose borders extended along the Nile.
Unesco then coordinated the largest archaeological rescue in history. Twenty gigantic monuments have been dismantled and rebuilt sheltered from the water, including the temples of Ramses II and Nefertari at Abu Simbel, as well as the Philae temple at Aswan.
